Credit Card Magnetic Stripe

If you own a credit card or other bank card you may have noticed a black colored stripe on the back of the card above where your signature goes. This stripe is called the magnetic stripe which is also known as the magstripe. This stripe is made up of iron based magnetic particles that are in a plastic film. Each particle is a tiny magnet that is less than 20-millionths long. The stripe can be written because the magnets can be magnetized in north or south pole directions.

These stripes allow companies to access your credit card and charge you for your purchases. These stripes are read by credit card machines all around the world making it easy for you to make purchases without having to carry around cash. Credit and debit cards can be taken in many different retail stores, grocery stores, salons, internet, and telephone. Having a properly working credit card is very important if you do not carry cash or other form of money.

Credit and debit cards with their magnetic stripes are not without problems. At certain times the magnetic strip can fail to work when ran thru a credit card machine. This can be for a variety of different reasons. The credit card machine itself can be malfunctioning, a scratched or dirty magnetic strip, or an erased magnetic strip. An erased magnetic strip can be caused by exposure to other magnets and store's electronic article surveillance. If your card becomes demagnetized you will have to get a replacement card from your bank or credit card agency. This could lead to fees that you should not have to pay and a wait to get your card back, which can take up to a week or longer.

The use of credit and debit cards is very popular today. Credit card machines can be seen at virtually every place of business. Credit cards as well as debit cards can be an easy way to pay and to not have to carry cash. Always make sure that you take proper care of your credit card. Make sure to keep it away from heat and sunlight and extreme cold. Avoid magnets at all costs as it will destroy your card. Take care not to scratch or get your card dirty as well. A properly taken care of card and magnetic strip can last you a long time. Remember to always take care of your credit card and make sure you are especially careful with the magnetic stripe.
